Government Admits Economic Growth Not Yet Felt by Ordinary Emaswati

Economy is Expanding but impact is not felt by citezens

Mbabane — The Eswatini government has admitted that recent economic growth is not yet being felt by ordinary citizens, despite positive national growth figures.

In an official year-end statement shared on government platforms, the Prime Minister acknowledged that while the economy is expanding, the benefits have not reached most households. He said growth reflected in reports and statistics has not yet translated into improved living conditions for many Emaswati.

The admission comes at a time when Eswatini’s economy is outperforming South Africa in terms of growth rate.  while growth figures are strong, challenges such as unemployment and weak job creation continue to affect households.

In his statement, the Prime Minister said investment activity and economic indicators show progress but conceded that the impact has not yet been felt “at household level.” He stressed that government priorities are now focused on ensuring growth leads to real outcomes such as employment, income generation, and improved access to services.

The Prime Minister pointed to ongoing efforts aimed at improving the business environment, supporting local enterprises, and accelerating projects intended to create jobs. He also highlighted infrastructure development and energy investments as part of broader measures to support economic activity.

Despite these efforts, the government acknowledged that cost-of-living pressures remain high and continue to affect families. Rising prices for electricity, food, and transport were cited as key challenges facing households.

The statement signals a shift toward more direct acknowledgement of the gap between economic performance and lived experience. Government officials said closing this gap remains a priority moving into the new year.

For now, the government says the focus is on turning economic growth into tangible benefits that can be felt by ordinary Emaswati across the country.
